The final event of the 2018-19 BC Men’s Curling Tour, the Ashley HomeStore Classic, came to a close on Monday November 26, with Team Muirhead winning the final draw.
Hosted by Penticton Curling Club, this highly anticipated annual event featured high profile teams from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Scotland and China.
Jim Cotter’s team of Steve Laycock, Tyrel Griffith and Rick Sawatsky was the sole BC team to progress past the round robin. They faced Jason Gunnlaugson’s Manitoba team of Alex Forrest, Denni Neufeld and Connor Njegovan in the tiebreakers, losing 5-4.
Team Gunnlaugson, Team Paterson, Team Muirhead, and Team Dunstone won their respective quarterfinal games to progress to the semifinals. Both of the Scottish teams came out on top, with Team Paterson beating Team Gunnlaugson 9-6 and Team Muirhead beating Team Dunstone 8-5.
While Ross Paterson’s team of Kyle Waddell, Duncan Menzies and Michael Goodfellow trailed 4-3 after seven ends in the final, they managed to score one point in the eighth to take the draw to an extra end. However, Glen Muirhead’s team of Kyle Smith, Thomas Muirhead and Cameron Smith were victorious, claiming a single point to win 5-4.
Team Muirhead was dominant all weekend, winning all of their round robin games before storming through the quarterfinals, beating the previously undefeated Team Dunstone in the semifinals, and claiming the win in the final.
