Russia’s Team Kovaleva won the Women’s event and Saskatchewan’s Team Dunstone won the Men’s event at the Prestige Hotels & Resorts Curling Classic at Vernon Curling Club this past weekend.
Three BC teams, Team Brown, Team Thompson and Team Gushulak, made it through to the quarterfinals in the Women’s event, with just Team Gushulak progressing to the semifinals. However, Diane Gushulak’s team of Grace MacInnes, Jessie Sanderson and Ashley Sanderson fell 9-1 in the semifinals to eventual champions Team Kovaleva.
Alina Kovaleva’s team of Anastasia Bryzgalova, Uliana Vasilyeva and Ejkaterina Kuzmina met Kelsey Rocque’s Alberta team of Danielle Schmiemann, Rebecca Konschuh and Jesse Iles in the final, winning with a score of 7-3.
In the Men’s event, Team Geall and Team Dunstone progressed straight to the semifinals after pool play. Team Klymchuk beat Team Barry 11-6 in their quarterfinal to meet Team Dunstone in the semis and Team Cotter edged Team Wenzek 10-9 in an extra end in their quarterfinal to meet Team Geall in the semis.
Matt Dunstone’s team of Braeden Moskowy, Catlin Schneider and Dustin Kidby and Jim Cotter’s team of Steve Laycock, Tyrel Griffith and Rick Sawatsky won their respective semifinals to make it to the Men’s final, which Team Dunstone won with a score of 8-5.
“The Prestige Hotels and Resorts Curling Classic has always tried to bring the best players in the world and it is only possible through our sponsors and volunteers and spectators alike,” said event organizer Dave Merklinger. The event featured teams from Canada, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Russia and China. “Thank you for making it another success!”

The next BC Men’s and Women’s Curling Tours event is the Driving Force Cashspiel at Abbotsford Curling Club from October 12 to 14.
